Being a Celiac as an adult is extremely difficult, but having a child with Celiac Disease can be just as hard if not harder. Having to say no when your child wants pizza and cake with kids at birthday parties or risking that they are giving something that contains gluten ca be extremely scary. There of course are the dangers that are always there and with time those will decrease and you child will know what they can and can’t eat. For the meantime here are a couple things that can help ease your child’s risk and decrease the pain they may experience.
Try packing snacks for your child whenever they go out. I know this seems like a no brainer but if they have safe food on them then they won’t have the temptation to eat something dangerous when they are hungry.
Call parents and teachers, if your kiddo is spending the night or going over to someone’s house make sure the parents know what not to feed your child. This will keep everyone aware and again decrease the risk of getting hurt. Their school should be aware just as any would with a desease. Make sure teachers leave substitutes notes and lunch ladies make options so that they are always safe!:)
Awareness is the best way to keep any one with an allergy or Celiac Desease free of risk or at least greatly decrease the risk of cross contamination.
