If your family is anything like mine was growing up, it can seem like you’re all on separate schedules during the school year. Play dates, football practice, mom’s fitness class, dad’s poker night, dress rehearsal, girl scout meetings, karate classes, piano recitals etc. made it difficult for my family to find time together. Fortunately us kid’s schedules cleared up once school got out and we had plenty of time to enjoy with each other. Take some time this summer and enjoy your family.
Go on a road trip! This was my favorite summer tradition. Every year dad would load up the station wagon and we’d set off for somewhere in the South West: The Grand Canyon, Moab/Arches, Bryce Canyon, Redwood National Park. Get your family outdoors and teach them to appreciate nature!
Pick up a new family hobby! Something outdoors that you can all enjoy. I recommend biking – it’s a great way to get your family exercising together. Pick a park close to your home and check out the route before taking your family. Make sure it’s safe and quiet – you don’t want to take your family through heavy traffic! Once at the park you can enjoy a picnic and watch your kids play at the playground.
Make fun lawn games! Here’s one that will get the whole family involved. For a classic game like bean-bag toss have dad cut out pieces of plywood and put them together (here’s a great Instructable). Help the kids paint the wood and make bean bags. Ladderball is another classic and easy-to-make game. Soon these lawn games will become fixtures at family events and cherished heirlooms!
