Baked on the Bright Side

GMO 101

October 8, 2012

Do you know what a GMO is?

GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organisms whether it’s fish, meat, or other ingredients. When a product is genetically engineered, the genetic make up of the organism is altered to enhance natural foods and give them characteristics it wouldn’t normally have.

How can GMOs hurt people?

They can have negative affects on pregnancy, make food allergy symptoms worse and have more intense reactions as well as other possible diseases requiring further research.

Did you know that 50 other countries require the labeling of GMOs?

Many of the US’s key trading partners have laws requiring the labeling of GMOs.

What are the environmental affects of GMOs?

GMOs are designed to have a high tolerance to pesticides so farmers are using an over abundance of herbicides to continue their practices all while ruining the drinking water and putting the workers in danger. Also, organic farmers are continuously threated by GMO using farmers because the GMOs and pesticides leak into the soil and work their way over to the organic farmers.

Did you know GMOs have never been tested on humans in the US?

Yup. You heard it! Though rats and mice have died many times for GMOs.

Did you know all of Rudi’s products are NON-GMO?

Rudi’s stays true to the heart of the business in baking breads on the bright side far, far away from genetically modified organisms, artificial colors and preservatives as well as many other additives.

    I have a question:
It says that “all of Rudi’s products are NON-GMO”, but are ALL of the ingredients NON-GMO as well? I’m most curious about the corn in particular. In the ingredients list for the Multigrain bread, it has an asterisk by the canola oil which refers to it specifically being NON-GMO, but nowhere on the package does it say that all ingredients are NON-GMO, or that the corn is. I wonder why none of the Rudi’s products are certified by the Non-GMO Project?

All ingredients used in Rudi’s Organic and Rudi’s Gluten-Free products are NON-GMO.  We are in the process of getting certified by the NON-GMO Project.  Unfortunately it is a very long and detailed process and takes quite a bit of time to get the certification.  We also have new packaging coming that notes all ingredients are NON-GMO.  Look for this new packaging to be hitting shelves in December. Thanks – Maggie, Rudi’s Organic and Rudi’s Gluten-Free Bakeries
