Five Fresh Organic Foods to Always Have

Here are 5 organic foods to keep fresh in your kitchen so you can always whip up something tasty and healthy. These are staples in my diet so I focus on making sure they are organic and as healthy as possible.

First up, we’ve got produce. Potatoes account for almost a third of the average American’s vegetable consumption. Commercially farmed potatoes are some of the most pesticide-contaminated vegetables. Stock these in your pantry and you’ll always be able to put together a hearty, healthy meal. Organic potato chips and potato salad can be pricey, so make your own!

I love apples – they keep  better than bananas. Too bad they’ve consistently ranked in the top 5 most pesticide-contaminated foods. I love to take apples hiking with a little Justin’s Maple Almond Butter.

On to dairy. Although many grocery chains, including Wal-Mart, Costco and Kroger, have stopped selling milk produced with artificial growth hormones, there are still plenty of chemicals to avoid by choosing organic milk. Kids consume more milk than adults, so organic milk should be a priority when shopping for your family.

I eat a lot of cheese: sandwiches, omelets, grilled cheeses, quesadillas (aka the Mexican Grilled Cheese), so I only buy organic cheese, unless I’m looking for a specialty cheese like Camambert. Dairy products involve a lot of processing, so for me it boils down to “Whom can I trust to process my cheese?” I trust Horizon Organic. We’ve always had their products at home growing up, so picking up their cheese and milk is a thoughtless process in the grocery store.

Personally, I thought organic meat was out of my budget. I’ve seen Food, Inc. half a dozen times and now whenever I think of chicken I can’t help but picture dark, dingy, revolting coop from which they came. A far cry from the chickens my neighbors keep. Imagine my surprise when I found Coleman Organic Whole Chicken for $2.29/lb at Costco! Now I can eat my wings and chicken salad guilt-free!

BONUS: Keep some Rudi’s in your pantry and put together an organic grilled cheese when your stomach rumbles!
